 Journaling:

Just like Alice entering Wonderland, I am uncertain a/b where I am in life, but curious a/b where I’m going. Life is nothing if not an adventure, even if I didn’t plan it this way… Hold tight.

 Techniques:

So, I really liked this photo of me… even if my head is cut off at the chin and there is a whole lot of sky in it (all unintentional. Oh, self timer! The woes and joys of using you!). My solution was to create a ghostly kind of image by printing the picture on vellum and creating focal interest by placing a scrap of cream cardstock underneath it. Looks kind of dreamy and introspective, no? That’s the mood for my layout and my journaling, too.

Inspired by mini canvases, I thought, “Why not use cardstock to create my own replicas?” The texture of the Eggplant Felt cardstock really looks like canvas, especially when painted, so I set to work!

Cut three 3 1/2 inch squares of Eggplant Felt cardstock.
Using a 2 1/2 inch square template as a guide, center it on each piece of the Eggplant Felt cardstock (I just eyeballed it), trace around the template, and draw diagonal lines to the corners of the cardstock.
Score along each line you drew and cut the diagonal lines of the corners.
After cutting, you should see that the square corners have turned into two small triangles — fold those inward and adhere. Your “canvases” will begin to take form.
When completed and turned over, your canvases should look like this.

Now for another technique — Vaseline resist! I wanted to create a painted, textured background on my canvases, so I did the following:

Apply a thin layer of paint. The drybrush technique will work best, as it will allow the texture of the Eggplant Felt cardstock to show through underneath, just like we want!
You can’t really see it (it’s a little shiny), but I added a layer of Vaseline over the dried layer of paint, and then added some green paint over the Vaseline. The Vaseline will be wiped away in the next step, so anything you want showing underneath it will magically reappear, even if you painted over the Vaseline with green paint. ;)
Let everything dry. This may take a while, and even the thickest layers of Vaseline won’t dry completely, but you can use a hair dryer or heat embossing tool to speed along the process. Then, using a cloth or paper towel, wipe away the Vaseline, and there you go! In my example, you’ll see the yellow peeking through where the Vaseline was, and the green is stuck to the canvas where the Vaseline wasn’t. Beautiful texture to collage over! :) Remember, there are lots of cool prizes to be won if you participate in each challenge this month! Can’t wait to see what you create.
