big ugly burgers, the joker + french class
those are just a few of the topics covered by the layouts i created with september’s crazy daisy kit, a few of which can still be purchased here! since my mini book was all about fall, i thought i’d switch it up and create some non-fall pages. here’s what i came up with:
bub’s, 12x12
more after the jump!
supply list:
- patterned paper: scenic route grey grid on white background and jenni bowlin play date die cut label
- alpha: basic grey max & whiskers micro monograms
- stickers: jenni bowlin star banner (multi colored) and jillibean soup old world cabbage stew cardstock
- inspiration cards: melody ross homespun chic collection
- flower: basic grey max & whiskers bloomers
- not in kit: thread and acrylic paint
this layout is about a visit to a mom + pop type restaurant… all the way back in 2006! i thought the “good & fine” sentiment from one of the melody ross cards really fit the retro-ish theme of the burger joint itself, as well as the jenni bowlin paper — she is the queen of vintage, after all!
the repetition of the photo containing the empty basket, along with the stitched lines, adds movement to the whole thing and ties it together design-wise. and if you’ll notice, i cut apart the star banner stickers to create tiny banners of my own… i used that technique throughout the rest of my layouts and in my mini book also. i just love the look and it’s another simple way to create custom embellishments. :) in the same vein, that green arrow sticker used to house a birdhouse which i had previously cut out and used in my mini book!

- journaling spots: jillibean soup orange circles kraft journaling sprouts

summer portrait is probably one of my favorite layouts to date… i had the idea to hang flowers on my layout a while ago and sketched it out so i wouldn’t forget about it, but i just didn’t know where else to go with things until this kit came along. while outside one day, splattering paint on vellum for one of my better scrap projects, i picked up a twig and it hit me (not the twig, of course, but an idea ;)): what a perfect companion for the hanging flowers!
the flowers were actually a part of a chipboard border which i cut up. some paint, scraps of fabric, ribbon, and that really pretty brown trim with the beads embroidered into it turned the plain chipboard flowers into little ornaments.
i also used some of the crate paper stickers for this non-school themed project by painting over them. it’s all about versatility! and speaking of that, the jillibean soup stickers are just naturally versatile. i love that.
why so serious?, 12x12

- alpha: jillibean soup old world cabbage stew cardstock and basic grey max & whiskers micro monograms
- stickers: jillibean soup old world cabbage stew cardstock
- journaling card: my mind’s eye life stories collection title
- other: brown trim
- not in kit: acrylic paint, joker ephemera
i was such a tomboy as a kid, and to be honest, i still am to a certain extent. it shouldn’t be surprising, then, to learn that i had just as many toy cars and action figures as i had barbies! quite a few of those action figures were superheroes, and batman and catwoman were among them. i also had joker swag, and the keychain featured in the photos on this layout is one i’ve had for a long, long time. the copyright date on the picture of the joker is 1992, so it’s been a while. anyway, i was beyond excited for the dark knight when it came to theaters in 2008, so this layout is about that!
one of my favorite things about this layout is its very center — the photo collage (again containing repetition; i’m a huge fan of that right now) in the framed journaling card and the edges of the brown trim which i stitched together to get more mileage out of my supplies.
parlez vous francais, 12x12
supply list:
- patterned paper: crate paper school spirit collection chalkboard, chemistry, study hall, + pep rally, and imaginisce apple cider collection apple crisp
- alpha: basic grey max & whiskers micro monograms
- stickers: jillibean soup old world cabbage stew cardstock and crate paper school spirit collection cardstock phrase
- journaling spots: jillibean soup orange circles kraft journaling sprouts
- not in kit: french class ephemera, acrylic paint, and chalkboard
i took french for 3 years in high school, and the most memorable years were probably my junior and senior year in french 2 + 3. why? my teacher was considered eccentric by most, but the good kind that was intriguing and had us all laughing. she really knew her stuff. also, there was a lot of goofing around involved, i’ll be honest, but that was all on me, not her. other kids were jealous because we’d have french cuisine days or get to have coffee (or in my case, hot chocolate) and do things in a more unorthodox way. it was just a fun and immensely interesting class, and i still love the french language as a result, even though i am beyond rusty with it!
the whole idea behind this layout is this: knowledge exploding out of my brain. that’s why the top of my head is flying off! i finally got a chance to use those cute school houses from the crate paper line and mixed and match lots of odds and ends in the kit to create the collage. i also threw in some of my own grades on verb quizzes and a “magnifique” sticker i was awarded. that, along with the photo of me giving a presentation, really personalized things.
sailor moon moon stick, 12x12
supply list:
- patterned paper: scribble scrabble sam’s collection tan stars/solid cream and jenni bowlin play date die cut label
- stickers: jenni bowlin star banner (multi colored) and basic grey max & whiskers micro monograms
- journaling spots: jillibean soup orange circles kraft journaling sprouts
- flower: basic grey max & whiskers bloomers
- not in kit: sailor moon cut outs
just like i was into batman and the joker, i was also into sailor moon, even more so, actually. while this is a relatively simple layout for me, i feel like it is a fun tribute to the show/manga that i loved and still love so much.
the scribble scrabble background paper really speaks for itself… the large pattern of stars wants to stand out, and i let it do just that by minimally covering it. the kraft journaling sprouts look great against the tan, so they were a perfect addition, and i customized the basic grey flower by mod podging the tiny jenni bowlin banners to it and the journaling sprout underneath.
my favorite part of this layout, though? the crescent moon in the sailor moon logo! i created a mosaic by cutting apart the yellow and navy blue star banner stickers and piecing them into the crescent shape. i sealed everything with mod podge and mod podge dimensional magic, so any loose bits wouldn’t go anywhere. it makes for a nice, finished, totally diy embellishment!
i’ll see you guys soon with more. ;)
